Hi, I’m Jan. But if we are working together in the studio, you’ll quickly find out that almost everyone calls me 'Yarn'.

With over 25 years of engineering experience in the music industry, I have dedicated my career to the two specific stages where a record truly finds its soul: music recording and mixing. For me, engineering isn't about sitting behind a screen clicking buttons; it's about partnering with you to remove the technical friction that stands between your creative vision and a finished record. My role is to safeguard your comfort in the studio, capture heart-felt performances and translate the raw emotion of your songs into an impactful sound that keeps your listeners on the edge of their seats.

I believe that truly incredible tracks aren't built by chasing digital perfection, hiding behind artificial auto-tune, or collecting a million different software plugins. A great record is captured when deep technical expertise is used entirely to serve the emotional storytelling of your song. My goal is always to make your music stand out by making it feel truely authentic.

• In the Recording Studio: My core recording superpower is capturing live ensemble energy. I specialise in tracking rhythm sections and entire bands simultaneously. Utilising the unique layout of our three separate live rooms, I make it possible for musicians to perform together in real-time, feeding off each other's body language and eye contact - all while maintaining the pristine, high-fidelity sonic separation needed for an elite-level modern mix.
• At the Mixing Desk: When it comes to mixing, I treat the mixer like a musical instrument. Through dedicated fader rides, dynamic automation, and careful spatial placement, I mix with my heart as much as my ears. I work to bring out the raw human element, the dramatic dynamic shifts, and those beautiful performance imperfections that make your art uniquely yours.

Deep Industry Roots and Audio Knowledge

My approach to music production is backed by a lifetime of industry productions across Europe and Australia, and rigorous study and education. I hold a First-Class Honours Degree in Recording Arts, am an Avid Certified Pro Tools Instructor, and have spent over 25 years lecturing in sound production at world-class institutions like SAE University College and Southern Cross University (SCU).

That unique cross-section of deep knowledge of audio science and real-world studio experience is exactly why I founded Mix Artist Academy. Through the academy, I provide self-producing musicians and aspiring engineers with clear, down-to-earth workflows, skipping the plug-in hype to teach them how to trust their ears and make confident, creative decisions.
